Chapter 24

Ryder

Me: Have dinner with me.

I waited anxiously for Bailey’s response to my text. When my phone chimed, I pulled it out of my pocket so fast I almost dropped it.

Sunshine: My place or yours?

I swear, my heart skipped a fucking beat.

Me: Yours.

She responded right away.

Sunshine: I can order a pizza. What time will you be home?

The word home reverberated through my head, drumming up all the possibilities. I knew what Bailey meant, that we both had the same address in different apartments. But what if I really was coming home to her? What if every day I got to come home to Sunshine?

The thought should have sent me into a whirlwind of anxiety, but it didn’t. Instead, all I could feel was raw anticipation.

Me: I’ll be home around 8:30.

Sunshine: Okay, I’ll have to have a snack before then, but I’ll try not to ruin my dinner.

I laughed out loud, making a couple of the other guys look at me funny. I ignored them all.

Me: Wouldn’t want you going hungry.

Sunshine: You couldn’t pay me to go hungry.

I laughed again and pocketed my phone. I could talk to her all day, but I had some walls to construct, and they weren’t going to build themselves.

Later on, while I was at the farm, my phone chimed with an incoming text. I used the hem of my shirt to wipe the sweat off my forehead and pulled out my phone.

Sunshine: Veggie lovers or meat lovers? Hint: there is no wrong answer.

A stupid grin spread across my face as I texted her back.

Me: Why are those my only options?

Sunshine: There has to be a minimum of three toppings on my pizza, or I don’t want it.

Me: So, no cheese and pepperoni?

Sunshine: Not if you want to share with me.

Me: Fine, meat lovers.

Sunshine: Good choice. Can’t wait to see you.

My stomach clenched in anticipation.

Me: Me too. I’ll see you soon.

The rest of my shift seemed to crawl by as I counted down the minutes until I could see Bailey. We’d exchanged texts all day long, but it wasn’t enough. I wanted to see the flash of mischief in her eyes when she was saying something sassy. I wanted to watch her lips curl up into a grin when she was up to no good.

And fuck, how had it only been twelve hours since I last kissed her?

It felt like so much longer. I knew I’d never get enough of this girl. Even if it had only been twelve minutes, I’d still miss the feel of her lips on mine. And today, I’d had an extra energy drink, so there was no way I was falling asleep on her.

I’d been dreaming about being inside her again, sure I’d imagined how good it was. How good we were even though it had only been our first time. I’d done things with her I’d never done with another woman. But somehow it had all felt natural. Like we’d been together for years.

I finished up my work and hurried to my truck, anxious to get to Bailey.
